ABSTRACT

Lean Hiring Practices

Based on the Toyota Production System (TPS) business model, Lean Systems have helped many businesses achieve significant gains in profitability and competitiveness. Despite the gains lean systems have made in the manufacturing sector, other environments have been slow to adopt its methods. In particular, organizations have failed to leverage the full power of lean when trying to acquire their most valuable asset: PEOPLE. Although workforce development is always important, this subject is especially critical during this time of workforce shortages. This session will highlight the pitfalls of traditional screening, evaluation, and interview techniques on hiring and contrast them with more effective lean methods to successfully match candidates to jobs. This session will also focus on a simpler way of collecting information on the appropriate candidates and the most effective methods for selecting finalists. This lean personnel approach utilizes techniques from the book Quantum Lean and is: Time-Focused – By leveraging the fact that time is the fuel that feeds all waste, techniques to streamline the hiring process and its timeframe are presented and how this leads to improving outcomes.Applicant-Centric – Instead of tracking time from a multitude of viewpoints, the hiring process is tracked from the standpoint of the applicant and only the applicant. Relentlessly maintaining this framework ensures a consistent benchmark to evaluate hiring practices against. Simple and Comprehensive – A comprehensive and structured analytic method called Product Path Diagramming (PPD) is presented. PPD simplifies the entire hiring process by identifying only relevant factors to the outcome, i.e., the best candidate to be hired.Ultimately, by deploying the principles outlined in this session, attendees can implement a comprehensive approach to streamline and improve their hiring practices.
