ABSTRACT

Efficient Process Maps in a Digital World

The presenter’s goal is to help Lean Six Sigma practitioners become more efficient in digitally capturing or converting process maps from their Kaizen events through application of an example. This presentation will provide the audience with a brief history of Process Mapping as taught in the late ‘80s by The Six Sigma Academy, the late ’90s with the release of the book Lean Thinking by Womack and Jones, and, finally, Creating and Using a Shingo-Style Process Map by Peter Gaa released in 2015. The example used will also show users how to convert Post-it notes on walls to a digitally transferable rendition or to virtually capture the process via conversion of documentation or interviews of subject-matter experts, the front-line workers. (The latter example was forced by the Covid-19 pandemic but lacks the benefits of team interaction and knowledge sharing in the face-to-face Kaizen events.)Although the various methods presented all have their advantages, this presentation will focus on the latest Shingo-Style method which combines the advantages of all the methods, while also providing the detail needed for analysis, waste elimination, and documentation of the work necessary to complete the process.Topics:·A typical Kaizen agenda·Mapping Methods oSix Sigma oLearning to See oShingo-Style·SIPOC, Supplier-Inputs-Process-Outputs-Customer·Data for Analysis·Waste – TIMWOOD (Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Over Processing, Over Production, Defects)·Process Steps (PITS – Processing, Inspection, Transportation, Storage)·Operation Steps·Separation of Flow (of People, Information, Material, Machines) from Work·Value Add vs Non-Value Add·Standard Operating Procedures·Digital documentation oMS PowerPoint oVisio oIBM Blueworks Live
